Starting with just 50 ferns when it opened decades ago, McPherson Greenhouse has blossomed into a wholesale plant business that is now open to the general public. The business marked this new chapter at its Peacock Road location near Chadbourn last week with a ribbon cutting organized by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.
Owners Penny and Handy McPherson also own Chadbourn Florist and used to sell ferns there. But when the pandemic struck, they decided to open McPherson Greenhouse as a retail location in an open environment for customers to shop in a larger space.
Penny McPherson said the chamber has been very supportive of her business and is an “awesome” organization that has reached out to her numerous times. She praised the chamber’s support for making her feel welcomed and encouraged to grow.
“When I joined the chamber through Chadbourn Florist,” McPherson explained, “I thought, ‘You know, McPherson Greenhouse is in the country, but we’re still in Columbus County.’ So this is how all of this came about.”
McPherson said she has made a lot of friends over the course of her time at Chadbourn Florist and McPherson Greenhouse. She feels blessed to receive many compliments about her ferns and geraniums from people she sees in public and at church.
Owners Penny and Handy McPherson cut the ribbon at McPherson Greenshouse’s ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Columbus Chamber of Commerce and Tourism.
“None of this would have been possible without God,” McPherson said. “He has opened doors, closed doors and opened new ones next week. He always has a plan, and he has blessed our business.”
McPherson Greenhouse’s most popular items are ferns and geraniums in the spring, while mums and pansies sell the most in the fall. Along with wholesale orders to golf courses and local landscaping companies, McPherson explained that the greenhouse has a large variety for the general public to choose from.
Growing several thousand ferns each year, McPherson hires seasonal employees to work in the 20 greenhouses on her 3.5-acre property.
“You can plant a tulip in the ground, but if God doesn’t bless it, it won’t materialize. He’s the reason why I’m where I am today,” McPherson said.
McPherson Greenhouse is open Tuesday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. It is closed Sundays and Mondays. The greenhouse’s location is 15738 Peacock Rd., and the phone number to place orders is 910-653-5720.
